Delta V: A Smartphone That Recharges Without Any Electricity

‘Delta V’ is the first hybrid-energy independent mobile phone. The phone charges using 3 different ways of charging directly on the cell phone’s housing: a photovoltaic film, a piezoelectric film and a triboelectric film technology.

The project was developed by Niki D. Chania (Neda Design), a mechanical engineer and industrial designer, during her studies at AKTO Art & Design School in Athens.

A film under each of these techs converts even the slightest vibrations and movements into power for the phone’s functions so that no charger is needed. The films are distinguished from their slightly different texture: beginning from the glossy photovoltaic to the rougher triboelectric film. Touching the back of the housing, the user can understand the different textures of the 3 films. Tapping the piezoelectric and rubbing the triboelectric film, the user can produce the necessary charging energy for the phone, always in conjuction with the energy produced by the photovoltaic panel. This is actually a feeling game for the user, playing with materials and producing energy!

The ‘Delta V’ smartphone also features a conductive material panel on the exterior that translates touching the phone into battery power as well. The incorporation of three different kinds of energy absorption makes the ‘Delta V’ smartphone concept one of the most innovative solutions that could help to satisfy energy demands in the future if the concept is moved into product development.
