For those of you out there (and we know there are many of you) hoping to see more of Brienne on “Game of Thrones” season 6, you’re in luck. Based on what we’re hearing now from series star Gwendoline Christie, her upcoming plot is going to be more than just her meandering about with Pod. She did have one huge moment in the finale courtesy of killing Stannis Baratheon, but it was a brief one … and the fact that we didn’t see the body of course has made some wonder whether or not he is actually dead.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Christie promised that this will be a big year for her character coming up:
“After season 5, people would come up on the street moaning about why wasn’t Brienne wasn’t doing more. I’d say, ‘I’m terribly sorry, I’m not really in charge of that.’” So are we in for another year of lackluster Brienne? Thankfully, no. “I got the scripts for season 6 and I thought the story was so fantastic,” Christie says. “It’s really exciting to see Brienne burst forth again.”
Christie drops a few additional clues, like the fact that Brienne’s story this season might be a little more emotion-based. “Brienne is so unique and unconventional and so strong, and I love the writing hasn’t allowed her to just rest there,” Christie says explaining why we’ll see more than just her brawn this year. “[Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss] are so terrific about how they develop characters. We see her develop like the way a human being might through life.” There’s a depth that’s been missing from Brienne’s plot for a few seasons. The show has reduced her from the well-rounded woman she became in Season 3 in the company of Jaime to something of a grim, Terminator-like figure in Seasons 4 and 5. Will this season see her re-united with the Kingslayer? (Maybe. More on that below.)
But if Brienne will be seeing a few familiar faces this year, she also could be on track to meet some all-new members of the cast. Christie told Entertainment Weekly that the threads of the show’s spread-out plot are coming back together this year. “So many characters for so long had their isolated storylines and as a fan of this show as well, I’ve been wanting and dreaming — ‘I wonder what it would be like to see this person interact with this other person?’ And that’s what starts to unfold.”
So what’s all this that Brienne is hinting at? Without the aid of book knowledge, the Game of Thrones pre-season information has been much harder to parse this year. But when you piece together the bits of Season 6 casting news and insider info, there’s mounting evidence that Game of Thrones Season 6 is heading towards something spectacular for Brienne of Tarth. There is some book knowledge and plenty of Season 6 behind-the-scenes info here so proceed, as ever, with caution.
Are they gone? Great. First it’s worth acknowledging that all we’ve seen of Brienne in the Season 6 footage is her still very much in Terminator mode hacking and slashing in the snowy woods and (presumably) hot on the trail of Sansa and Theon.
But that doesn’t mean she’s staying up North. While plenty of Season 6 will be based off future, unknown book material, there are a few older stories coming back into the rotation. Book four’s Greyjoy plot line as well as Sam’s journey to Oldtown—also partially covered in the fourth book—will feature heavily this season. So if we can return to Greyjoy and Tarly plots from A Feast for Crows, then why not Brienne and Pod’s travels in the Riverlands?
In the books, Brienne and Pod have adventures while tracking down Sansa. So a little less frostbite, and a lot more action.
